What does AI safety mean?
AI systems are evolving faster than our ability to understand and control them. AI safety is about closing that gap before the consequences become irreversible.
Speed
A few years ago, AI that could outperform university students at maths would have been dismissed as science fiction. The pace of development isn't slowing down. It's accelerating.
Control
No one can currently guarantee that the most powerful AI models actually follow human instructions. These models have been observed pursuing goals nobody gave them, and signs of dishonesty and self-preserving behaviour have been documented, including by the UN's own scientific advisory panel.
Power
Today, these decisions are made by a handful of companies and governments. AI is increasingly becoming a tool for dominance, and concentrated control over the technology becomes concentrated political power.
This concerns more than just technologists
Systems that shape information, working life and public services also shape the choices available to people who have no hand in building the technology.
That's why AI safety isn't just a research question — it's a societal one.
